Clacton County High School’s under-13s girl’s football team has won a place at the Premier League Schools Tournament finals, representing Chelsea FC.
Last month the girls took part in the first tournament held at Moulsham high school in Chelmsford, where they played against all participating Essex school teams. They played six matches, one of which was against local rivals Tendring technology college, which went to sudden-death penalties. But a goal from Sara Smith-Walters meant the CCHS girls were victorious. They are now at the top girls’ football competition.
The girls went on to play at Chelsea FC’s training ground where they played against all southern county school winners. They also claimed victory on that meet, putting them through to the National Finals where they were asked to represent Chelsea.
Due to these triumphs, the girls have also been asked to participate in the half time entertainment during the Chelsea vs. Liverpool ladies match on Sunday 8th May ahead of the National Finals on 16th May. These finals will be held at Everton’s football ground Goodison Park. The team will also get their very own Chelsea FC football kit.
Thirteen year-old Hermione Wood who plays left wing on the team said, “I’m so excited to be going to Everton’s ground, I know we would love to win but we already feel like winners because we’ve got this far.”
The team trains every Monday and closer to the tournament they will be put through their paces with practice on Wednesday evening as well.
The team’s coaches Laura Townsend and Ben Elliott believe that the girls have the ability and determination needed to win the tournament.
“They have done amazingly well in the competition so far. We are immensely proud of every one of them.”
