To celebrate the Lunar New Year 2021 the University of Essex Students Union, in partnership with other societies, organised a week full of activities including quizzes and gifts.

“It was fantastic last year, our society held the Chinese New Year Gala at Ivor Crewe hall and it had a huge audience, even the council leaders and the vice-chancellor of University came. There were dancers, magicians from the UK’s Got Talent and a huge firework show,” said Tom, the president of The Chinese Students and Scholar Association (CSSA).

It was recording the moments from last year that the SU in collaboration with CSSA, CCCS ( Colchester Chinese Culture Society), Malaysian Society and Origami Society have decided to commemorate the festivities online.

The week began with Tai Chi workshops with Dr Xie Yuhong followed by Caligraphy workshops given by Master Annie, who has more than twenty years of calligraphy writing experience, one session of Face Mask Painting with Mr Archie Sheng and Origami sessions.

After a week with lots of activities, a live stream event of the Lunar New Year Gala 2021 within the Gala Show was presented with the performance from the amazing National Ballet of China.

On the day of the Gala, students could also get a celebration gift bag which contained a range of sweet treats and traditional items to celebrate the year.

” There is a quote in Chinese saying that when the snow comes that means it will be a prosperous new year. So the snow is already here and we will get back to normal soon I hope,” said Tom to all the Essex students.

May the Year of the Ox bring immense Joy and Happiness.
